Former Fresno County Sheriff Richard Pierce, a dedicated law enforcement officer who served as Fresno County Sheriff from 1999 to 2007, passed away peacefully on Wednesday with his family by his side. He was 80 years old.
Born in Madera on March 27, 1944, Mr. Pierce was raised in the Kings County town of Avenal. His father worked in the oil fields and also served two terms as the Avenal constable.
Mr. Pierce graduated from Avenal High School and attended San Diego State College.
He began his law enforcement career on Dec. 1, 1966, as a deputy with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. Early in his career, he worked in various roles including courthouse bailiff, jailer, and patrol officer.
Mr. Pierce ran unopposed for sheriff in 1998, succeeding three-term sheriff Steve Magarian. Mr. Pierce was reelected in 2002, again facing no opposition. He then decided to retire at the end of his second term and was succeeded by Margaret Mims.
In addition to focusing on public safety during his time as sheriff, Mr. Pierce went to great lengths to reorganize the department and boost employee morale.
Mr. Pierce is survived by his wife, five children, and several grandchildren.
