The Group of 5 conferences, including the Mountain West, are set to discuss the possibility of creating their own football playoff system.
According to Yahoo! Sports reporter Ross Dellenger, commissioners from the Group of 5 will meet in Dallas next week to explore various issues, including the potential for a separate playoff system. This system would essentially crown a second-tier champion among non-power conference schools.
Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez seems open to the idea, stating, “That would be really interesting and have some value. What if it’s like an NIT of football?”
The proposed playoff would be in addition to the Group of 5’s guaranteed spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. However, creating a separate playoff system could put that at risk, a concern acknowledged by Nevarez.
“We don’t have the leverage or the value commanded by a few but that access piece is very important to us,” Nevarez told Dellenger. ” It changes the equation drastically if we don’t have that.”

Other topics on the agenda include NCAA governance, private equity opportunities, and potential revenue-sharing with athletes in light of recent legal developments.
The meeting highlights the growing financial disparity between power conferences and the Group of 5. While Mountain West teams currently receive about $3.5 million per school annually, power conference payouts have surpassed $60 million per school.
