Muhammad Dahlan, a former security chief for the Palestinian Authority from Gaza, has shared his vision for the future of Gaza in the aftermath of the recent war. Despite not seeking leadership, Dahlan has proposed a two-year transitional period with an administration run by technocrats in Gaza and the West Bank, aiming to reunify the Palestinian territories. He also envisions parliamentary elections, with all Palestinian political factions, including Hamas, participating. Dahlan believes that Arab states such as Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates could support this Palestinian state, which should then gain international recognition, including from Israel.
Dahlan, who has close ties with Egypt’s president, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, dismissed the idea of allowing refugees into the Sinai peninsula to alleviate the crisis in Gaza. He also suggested that the Palestinian leadership structure should shift from a presidency to a parliamentary system, with a prime minister leading the Palestinians. Despite the current turmoil, Dahlan remains hopeful for the Palestinian cause, seeing an opportunity even amidst the war.
