A State Center Community College District police sergeant’s handgun went missing Wednesday evening during a foot chase at Fresno City College.

The gun is a fully loaded Smith & Wesson MP 9 mm handgun, the district reported.

The sergeant, who was not identified, was assisting Fresno police in searching for suspects in a stolen vehicle incident near the Fresno City College campus. He found one of the suspects in the northeast part of the campus, and when the suspect began running the sergeant chased him.

During the chase the sergeant fell in the parking lot south of the college’s parking garage, causing some of his equipment to break. Unaware of this, the sergeant continued to chase the suspect but then retraced his steps when he realized the gun and its holster were missing, the district reported.

The district is reviewing surveillance video and is continuing its investigation to find the lost weapon. District spokeswoman Jill Wagner said Thursday that the gun is still missing.

The gun can be returned with no questions asked by calling State Center PD dispatch at (559) 244-6140 or by contacting the Fresno Police Department at (559) 621-7000.
