A break in the weather Tuesday and Wednesday on the Central Coast allowed searchers near San Miguel to look for Kyle Doan, the 5-year-old who vanished after he and his mother were stranded in a truck in rising waters on Monday.
The only item that air, ground, K-9, and water search crews have turned up is one of Kyle’s tennis shoes. That was found on the day of his disappearance before rising water levels in the Salinas River made it too dangerous for divers to continue the search.
Search and Rescue Teams Gather in San Luis Obispo County
“Today, the Sheriff’s Office received mutual aid resources from other law enforcement agencies including Dive Team members, Search and Rescue team members, and K-9 units from Ventura County and Santa Barbara County,” said San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s spokesperson Tony Cipolla in a news release on Wednesday afternoon.
“Additionally, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has supplied personnel with sonar equipment to aid in the search. We thank our mutual aid partners for helping us with the search while having to deal with rain-related incidents in their own counties. Search efforts will continue the rest of the day and will continue (Thursday) as well if warranted.”

Kyle Attends Kindergarten at Mom’s School
Bystanders pulled Kyle’s mother out of the truck, but the boy was carried out of the vehicle and swept downstream.
Kyle is a kindergarten student at Lillian Larsen Elementary School in San Miguel, where his mother is a teacher.
“San Miguel is a small, very close-knit community and everyone has the family in their thoughts and prayers during this unfathomable tragedy,” said Superintendent Karen Grandoli in a statement to ABC 7. “The family is continuing to search for him in hopes that he might be found. Staff is beginning to organize support for the family. We are determining what their immediate needs are at this time.”
