Witnesses says at least one person was cut by shards of glass that suddenly rained down on spectators during Saturday night’s Fresno State football game at Valley Children’s Stadium on the university campus.

A window in a coaches’ observation booth overlooking the field from the top of the stadium suddenly broke as the first half was coming to a close. A girl seated below the booth was reportedly injured by the falling glass and required medical attention.

After the Bulldogs gave up a touchdown late in the half to rival San Jose State, a loud boom was heard and glass could be seen in Section 11, which straddles the 50-yard line on the west (home) side of the stadium.

A broken pane of glass can be seen from the outside of a Fresno State coaches’ observation booth at Valley Children’s Stadium. Witnesses say shards of glass rained down on spectators below the booth shortly after the Fresno State Bulldogs gave up a touchdown late in the first half in their game against San Jose State on Saturday night. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, including Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies and University Police. Stadium staff were dispatched to the section to clean up the debris.

It is unclear how or why the glass broke.

A man, who witnesses say was the father of the injured girl, was visibly upset and was seen talking to law enforcement officers. Witnesses say another spectator complained of head pain, but did not appear to need medical attention.

University Police told GV Wire they spoke with one of the Fresno State coaches who was working in the booth, before the game resumed for the second half. According to the Fresno State game notes, a Bulldog offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator are both assigned to the booth.

At his post-game news conference, Bulldogs Head Coach Jeff Tedford said he was unaware of the incident. Upon learning that a girl was injured he said that it “broke his heart.”
