A 22-year-old Fresno man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting and killing his parents at their northeast home, Fresno police said Monday.

Fresno police officers responding to reports of a shooting found the suspect, Julian McElhaney, on the front lawn of the home around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

His mother, 64-year-old Sylvia McElhaney, was shot to death inside the home and his father, 55-year-old William McElhaney, was dead on the front lawn, police said.

According to police, Julian McElhaney called 911 and said he had killed his parents.

Police identified William McElhaney as a longtime maintenance worker for Clovis Unified School District.

Julian McElhaney was booked into the Fresno County Jail at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, and it’s not known if he has retained an attorney.

Investigators have not released a possible motive for the killings.

DA Files Murder Charges

On Tuesday, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against McElhaney.

The DA’s Office said in a news release that it “is currently conducting the necessary analysis on whether to seek the death penalty and will make an announcement on that decision at a later
date.”

McElhaney’s arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Fresno County Superior Court.
