In Tulare County, women wanting to end a pregnancy with help from Planned Parenthood are pointed to clinics an hour away in Fresno and Bakersfield.
Hoping to expand their clinic and eventually offer abortions, Planned Parenthood leaders began the process last year of securing a site in Visalia on Mooney Boulevard.
But even though Planned Parenthood intentionally left its name off the application documents, the anti-abortion group Tulare-Kings Right to Life got wind of the proposal.
Documents obtained by Reuters show that more than 200 people shared their opinions on the proposed clinic with City Hall via handwritten letters, emails, and telephone calls.
Ultimately, the clinic’s opponents won out — for now. Planned Parenthood leaders said last week that they will hunt for a different Visalia location for the clinic.
