Do you like taking dogs for a nice long walk? If you are more of a cat person, the Fresno Humane Animal Services team needs your help too.

Nearly 130 dogs and 175 cats, evacuated from the Creek Fire, are currently being housed at the Fresno Fairgrounds’ Commerce Building. The non-profit organization managing the temporary shelter is in need of volunteers to exercise and interact with the animals at different times throughout the day.

Dog Walkers and Cat Volunteers Needed

Nearly 130 dogs and 175 cats are currently being housed at the Fresno Fairgrounds’ Commerce Building.

Brenda Mitchell, board president of Fresno Humane Animal Services, says the 7 a.m.- 10 a.m. shift is the busiest time. “That’s the morning potty and breakfast,” she said.

Mitchell said about 20 dog walking volunteers and 10 cat volunteers are needed during the morning hours.

She says there’s another shift in the afternoon that’s a little slower. Dog walkers are encouraged to spend quality time with the dogs. Cats go to bed after the 3 p.m. shift.

The evening shift is 6-8 p.m. and is the last potty walk before bed. About 20 dog walking volunteers are needed for that shift also, Mitchell said.

Volunteer Signup

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and previous experience with a rescue agency or a shelter is a plus.

Text “VOLUNTEER” to (559) 600-7387 to add your number to the call-back list. You can also call (559)600-PETS

Essential Items Needed

The shelter is also in need of large towels (clean, used ones are fine), paper towels, trash bags, liquid laundry soap, non-clumping kitty litter, and 6-foot leashes.

They also need rolling carts to move supplies to & from the animal areas, as well as storage bins for supplies.

Direct Donations

You can donate directly to Fresno Humane to cover medical expenses such as vaccines, flea/tick treatment, microchips, medication, and emergency care. Their goal is to raise at least $10,000 so they can offer those services at no charge to the families.
