This is a story of what will happen if you’re “caught” wearing a face mask.
The Central Valley Community Foundation is randomly seeking out 400 people in Fresno, Madera, Tulare, Kings, and Merced counties to receive a $100 Visa gift card.
It’s part of a $50,000 campaign to encourage mask use to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“The sooner we put our masks on, the sooner we get out of this mess.” — Ashley Swearengin, president/CEO, Central Valley Community Foundation
“The sooner we put our masks on, the sooner we get out of this mess,” said Ashley Swearengin, president/CEO of the foundation spearheading the effort. The announcement was made Friday during a Fresno County Department of Public Health Zoom call with reporters.
So far, they have enough money to surprise 400 people. Swearengin says that doesn’t have to be the ceiling.
“I think there are certainly some motivated donors out there that can maybe help us extend the program,” she said.
#MASKUPCV Campaign
During the #maskupcv (Mask Up Central Valley) campaign, representatives are looking for people wearing masks. They will ask why you’re wearing a mask.
“You never know. You might be out running an essential errand and somebody stopped you and said, ‘Hey, thank you for being kind and wearing your mask. Here’s $100,’ ” said Swearengin.
Videos of People Getting Surprised
The ‘mask up‘ website has videos of people getting their $100 surprise.
“I don’t want to cry, but we’ve been struggling with groceries,” said mom Jasmine after receiving a $100 gift card from Sanger Mayor Frank Gonzalez.
Her daughter, Ava, said she wears her mask because of the coronavirus.
