John Kasich, the former Republican governor of Ohio who opposed President Donald Trump for the 2016 GOP nomination, is reportedly planning to speak at next month’s Democratic National Convention in support of Joe Biden, who is currently far ahead of the president in polling.
Key Facts:

The Associated Press first reported plans for Kasich’s role at the convention.
Kasich has been a mainstay in the Republican Party for decades, rising from an Ohio state senator in the 1970s to winning the state’s governorship on a Tea Party wave in the 2010 election.
He won reelection by over 30% in 2014, setting the stage for his 2016 presidential run, in which he staked out a moderate beachhead strongly opposed to Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
