UPDATE:
While Clovis Unified schools will remain open, the district has temporarily suspended all activities, competitions and events, officials announced Thursday.
The list of affected activities includes athletic competitions, campus open house events, festivals, student assemblies, dances, fundraising dinners, and more. The district said the restrictions will remain in place through April 13.
This is a developing story.
Clovis Unified School District is in the process of adjusting activities in light of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s directive to limit public gatherings to no more than 250 people to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The district will be providing updates to parents by email, phone, text and app push notifications shortly, district spokeswoman Kelly Avants said in a statement released this morning.
Additional information about specific events and about plans for the coming weeks will be posted online and delivered directly to parents via email, phone, text and app push notification shortly.
“We recognize that this directive has far-reaching implications for our community and are proceeding with great care to make adjustments that minimize the impact on any individual family,” Avants said in the statement.

No Closures For Schools

Schools will remain in session, she said.
Meanwhile, the California Interscholastic Federation announced that the state basketball finals for boys and girls teams have been canceled.

And a robotics competition that would have brought 1,250 students from across the Central Valley to the Fresno Convention Center this week has been canceled. FIRST California Robotics made the following announcement on its website this morning:
“Given the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation and the California Governor’s announcement of new guidelines released by the California Public Health Department that large gatherings over 250 people should be postponed or canceled, onsite leadership and leadership at FIRST Headquarters have decided to postpone the Central Valley Regional effective immediately.”
The Fresno County Office of the Superintendent of Schools is postponing numerous events, spokeswoman Lisa Birrell said. She expects to have more information this afternoon.
