Take 5: Public Service Motivates Miller in District 3 Race

Daren Miller, running for Fresno City Council’s District 3 seat, says he is not a politician.
“I’m an educator who’s going into politics. I’m a public servant,” he says.
District 3 is currently represented by Oliver Baines, who will term out of office at the end of 2018. Other announced candidates in the race to date are Tate Hill, Craig Scharton and Barigye McCoy.
Miller visited GV Wire to talk on-camera about his background and candidacy.
In the video above, he shares his reason for seeking office, and his views on recent investments in District 3, prospects for Downtown’s Fulton Street and legalized marijuana.
Miller also discusses his racial discrimination lawsuit against Madera Unified. The district removed him as principal in 2009 and Miller sued shortly thereafter.
The parties settled in 2016 for $375,000. Miller now serves as a counselor with Desmond Middle School.

Curiosity drives David Taub. The award-winning journalist might be shy, but feels mighty with a recorder in his hand. He doesn't see it his job to "hold public officials accountable," but does see it to provide readers (and voters) the information needed to make intelligent choices. Taub has been honored with several writing awards from the California News Publishers Association. He's just happy to have his stories read. Joining GV Wire in 2016, Taub covers politics, government and elections, mainly in the Fresno/Clovis area. He also writes columns about local eateries (Appetite for Fresno), pro wrestling (Off the Bottom Rope), and media (Media Man). Prior to joining the online news source, Taub worked as a radio producer for KMJ and PowerTalk 96.7 in Fresno. He also worked as an assignment editor for KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, California, and KSEE-TV in Fresno.
