A driver suspected of fleeing law enforcement was arrested Monday night after leading officers on a high-speed pursuit through Merced County before crashing and attempting to run from the scene, authorities said.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol’s Merced office and deputies with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office located a vehicle Monday night that had been involved in a pursuit with the Turlock Police Department the previous evening, according to CHP Merced.
When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly refused to yield and sped north on Shaffer Road at a high rate of speed. The pursuit ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed near Gertrude Avenue, authorities said.
After the crash, the suspect fled on foot but was quickly detained by Merced County sheriff’s deputies and taken into custody by CHP officers, according to the agency.
Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s identity, age, or potential charges.
CHP Merced said the arrest was the result of cooperation among the CHP, Merced County Sheriff’s Office and Turlock Police Department, which shared information across jurisdictions to locate the vehicle and arrest the driver.
The investigation remains ongoing.
