As 2022 comes to a close, GV Wire takes a look back at key moments that shaped the year in local news.

Margaret Mims, the longtime Fresno County sheriff, announced in February that she would be hanging up her badge and retiring from the post she had held for 16 years. She endorsed Assistant Sheriff John Zanoni as her successor. In June, Zanoni won the election to replace Mims.
The flag of Ukraine flies alongside the U.S. flag at Eaton Plaza in March. Local officials, including Mayor Jerry Dyer, joined with community members to voice their support for Ukraine after the country was invaded by Russia weeks earlier. “(We) denounce this senseless war; a war that was completely unprovoked and unnecessary,” Dyer said at the flag-raising event.
Residents sought to prevent the takeover of Trails End Mobile Home Park in Fresno by controversial operator Harmony Communities. After several delays, a judge approved the sale of the park to the company.
A social media post of a Bullard student wearing what appeared to be a KKK hood in the school’s weight room led to a walkout by hundreds of Edison High School students in May. The group marched to Fresno Unified’s downtown Education Center chanting “hold them accountable.”
A drag queen performance at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in June was the target of protests by some Fresno area political and religious leaders. The event went forward with a “capacity” audience.
Fresno’s first cannabis retailers opened their doors following years of bureaucratic and regulatory planning. Stores have been approved for locations across the city, though most are still in various stages of planning.
Gov. Gavin Newsom chose McLane High School in Fresno to introduce a $4.7 billion statewide investment plan intended to increase mental health services to Californians up to age 25.
Former Fresno-area congressman TJ Cox was arrested in mid-August by the FBI on fraud charges, culminating a years-long investigation. He was charged with 28 criminal counts, including at least one related to his involvement with the troubled Granite Park Sports Complex.
Bear Robotics showed how it is turning science fiction into reality at September’s MADE Central California food expo in Fresno. It showed off its Servi robot, which can help address restaurant staffing issues by delivering food to diners at their table. The robot is currently in use at two local eateries.
Frustrated with the time it takes PG&E to provide power hookups to new residential and commercial developments, local leaders threatened to jettison the utility and create a city-owned power company. Councilmember Garry Bredefeld labeled PG&E “a criminal enterprise.”
Retired school psychologist Susan Wittrup easily unseated Bullard area incumbent Terry Slatic in the most closely watched Fresno Unified School Board election of 2022. Wittrup threw her hat in the ring early and built a huge campaign treasury to take on Slatic, who was repeatedly censured for his actions during his single term on the school board.
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield has won his party’s nomination for speaker, fending off a challenge from a more conservative challenger. Still, the number of Republicans voting for him shows that McCarthy must win over GOP holdouts to ascend to the to House leadership position in the New Year.
Andrew Janz, a violent crimes prosecutor with the Fresno County District Attorney’s office and former mayoral and congressional candidate, was named as the new city attorney in November. His hiring followed the departure of Doug Sloan under tumultuous circumstances.
In a continuing show of solidarity with the people of Iran, hundreds of Iranian-Americans from Fresno, Clovis, and Visalia protested weekly in north Fresno, chanting “women, life, freedom,” “democracy for Iran,” and “down with the Islamist regime.”
The Fresno County District Attorney’s office dropped criminal charges against Fresno City Council President Nelson Esparza during a pre-trial hearing in December. It was an unexpected move that cleared Esparza of allegations that he attempted to extort then-city attorney Douglas Sloan by threatening his job.
A parade of strong storms drenched the local area over in late December, adding to reservoir supplies and the Sierra snowpack. While encouraging, experts warned against predicting an end to California’s three-year drought.
