After recovering from a COVID-19 bout last year, Fresno City Councilwoman Esmeralda Soria has tested positive again.

Soria, who represents west-central Fresno, said Friday morning that she had the virus despite being vaccinated.

“I’m in shock,” she told The Fresno Bee’s Brianna Calix. “I’ve tried to do everything by the book, in terms of the guidelines with the new delta variant, like wearing my mask indoors. I’ve been wearing my mask at City Hall for the last couple weeks.”

Soria added that unlike her COVID experience last December, she doesn’t have symptoms this time.

The councilwoman attended Thursday’s marathon council meeting. The other six councilmembers were there, too, as were Mayor Jerry Dyer and other city officials. Dyer tested positive for COVID-19 last November.

After Soria’s announcement, councilmember Miguel Arias tweeted Friday morning that he’s going into quarantine.  In June 2020, COVID-19 testing became available to City Hall staff after Arias announced he was going into quarantine because his son had the virus.
