A second-grade teacher at Gibson Elementary School was arrested Tuesday evening in northeast Fresno on a charge of inappropriate relations with a minor.
Aaron Butler, 47, was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior with a child under the age of 14, according to Fresno County Jail records. He was released from custody Wednesday on a bond of $75,000.
District spokeswoman Amy Idsvoog said Butler has worked for the district since 1999, including the last two years at Gibson.
Butler was arrested by Fresno police at 7:22 p.m. Tuesday at the Vons supermarket at 8949 N. Cedar Ave.
Principal Antonio Sanchez said in a message to families on Wednesday that the alleged incident occurred several years ago and was unrelated to Gibson.
Fresno Police spokesman Jeff La Blue said the allegation involved a female student at another Fresno Unified school.
Sanchez said Butler has been placed on administrative leave.
Gibson Elementary is at 1266 W. Barstow Ave. in north-central Fresno.
“Allegations of this nature are extremely disturbing and do not reflect the high professional standards of the district or Gibson Elementary,” Sanchez said in the message. “In the event these allegations are true, the district will take swift and appropriate action.
“Fresno Unified School District takes these allegations very seriously and will continue to cooperate with local law enforcement as they move forward with their investigation.”
