According to the Associated Press, Iraq’s prime minister recently declared victory against the militant terrorist group known as the Islamic State.
Sunday, the day after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in the 3-year fight against ISIS, Iraqis celebrated a new state holiday.
Leaders around the world, including a number of Arab countries, applauded the announcement and the years of struggle that led to this point.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said, “Daesh no longer hold significant territory in Iraq or Syria. This signals a new chapter towards a more peaceful, prosperous country.”
American Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II promised continued American support to ensure the final defeat of ISIS, saying that “much work remains.”
