Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the lightning rod former law-enforcement agent from Arizona, is in Fresno tonight.
Earlier this week, the Bay Area News Group (San Jose Mercury/Oakland Tribune, etc.) talked with Arpaio. One topic that is expected to come up at tonight’s speech: the President Obama birth certificate issue.
“It has to go down as the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States,” Arpaio told the newspaper. “Nobody wants to touch it.”
Arpaio repeated his issues of whether the nation’s 44th president was really an American in an interview Friday afternoon with Power Talk 96.7 host Trevor Carey. He told the radio host it would be “chapter one” of a forthcoming book.
The “birther” issue dogged Obama for most of his administration, fueled in part by Donald Trump. While the evidence points to the fact that Obama was born in Hawaii and thus is a U.S. citizen that still has not satisfied critics such as Arpaio.
The Fresno County Republican Party is holding the fundraiser, with a First and Second Amendment theme. Officials expect a sold-out crowd of 300 to attend. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says upward of 80 officers from his department alone will be on patrol.
